Building a Patient Advocacy Masterclass

withPatients Rising

The Ask

Develop an advocacy training program for patients and caregivers from across therapeutic areas with an eye towards long term community engagement and grooming patient delegates who can advocate for patient-centered policies.

The “Master Class” was born out of my personal experience taking courses on Udemy during the COVID-19 pandemic. I love liberating ideas from industries outside of healthcare to innovate within.

The Approach

I began by conducting a thorough mapping of what advocacy training programs already exist and engaging in conversations with the Patients Rising team as well as patient advocates to identify greatest unmet needs.

Then, I thought about how we could innovate to develop a completely new advocacy training model.

The “Master Class” was born out of my personal experience taking courses on Udemy during the COVID-19 pandemic. I love liberating ideas from industries outside of healthcare to innovate within.

Once the class concept was developed, I worked alongside notable patient advocates to build content ranging from how to raise your voice at ICER and DUR meetings to how you engage on social media with your representatives. In parallel with course development came the selection of a community platform, comprehensive launch plan, and long term engagement strategy.

Note: I had the pleasure of working alongside policy experts Winning Strategies Washington and video production extraordinaires the Princeton Strategic Communications Group who helped bring the master class to life.

The Results

14 week

Immersive advocacy course

100+

Applications to the program

50

Enrolled advocates

An entirely new learning model for the patient advocacy community was born.

The Patients Rising Master Class is a 14-week, immersive experience that teaches patients all they need to know about advocacy on and off the hill and provides them with the tools and tactics they need to be an effective healthcare advocate.

Designed as a mini-college course, students receive a curriculum with weekly reading, watching, and listening to be completed at their own pace. Course participants come together on an interactive community platform and engage in live virtual sessions to connect with fellow classmates and hear from leading advocates.

Applications opened for the Master Class with only 50 seats available for the winter course. Within one week, we had exceeded 50 applications. Within two weeks, we had over 100.

Working with Lilly has been an absolute pleasure.

She has continued to exceed expectations with her enthusiasm, expertise, and attention to detail. As a small organization, it is imperative we hire self-directed, creative, and passionate people when we are launching a new initiative. Lilly has been one of our best decisions!  - Terry Wilcox, Founder & Executive Director, Patients Rising
